Marietas Island is located in the mouth of Bandera’s Bay at 22 nautical miles west of Puerto Vallarta, and the reef is so extensive that one could spend a full week of diving and not be able to enjoy the entire underwater world of the islands. It must be mentioned that Jacques Yves Cousteau chronicled the islands because of the variation of impressive life.
The reef depth ranges from 15 - 90 feet. Marietas holds the largest number of cleaning stations in the entire Bay, mantas spend hours approaching these cleaning stations, this is the place to encounter the Great Pacific Manta and chances are better than good. Once again Marietas Islands will prove to be a memorable experience you will cherish and keep as a souvenir to take back home.
The islands are the perfect home for snorkelers looking for shallow, coral reef bottoms and tropical life, but the big attraction is the opportunity to spot huge pacific manta rays. The mantas range in size from 8 - 14 feet, and frequent the islands because of the abundance of plankton, its natural food source.
There are three spectacular swim through tunnels at this site that you will be able to enjoy if weather permits, possibilities better than good!
This site is located on the East side of La Redonda and is totally protected from the ocean currents, the numbers of tropical sea life are astounding and the depths are a relaxing 25 ft to 45 ft. The South end of La Redonda is 100 ft high and drops vertically into the ocean and down to 65 ft deep. Drifting along this wall is the best option to make a real dive tour. You will be able to enter a large death cave, surface in a 45 ft deep air pocket, swim around a sea mount, swim through again and end the dive in the southern corner of the island.
Divers and Snorkelers go out on the same trip, so if your companion would prefer snorkeling, please be sure to check out our Snorkeling Marietas Island tour.
